Alongside that, there are several different kinds of tongues. The apostle Paul talked about speaking in languages of angels, which is one form of tongues. It can be used in private prayer to God, or as Craig said, as a message to the church that someone will be able to interpret. In the account in Acts 2 the apostles were preaching to the multitudes in their own language, but it said that those were people from all over the world who all heard the message in their own language. This is completely inspired and directed by the Holy Spirit and is a wonderful gift.
Tongs is a spiritual prayer language between you and God. However some may be able to interrupt what you are speaking. I know a pastor who was speaking in tongs and did not realize he was speaking another persons language until that person told him. He has never spoke that language.
