Alongside that, there are several different kinds of tongues. The apostle Paul talked about speaking in languages of angels, which is one form of tongues. It can be used in private prayer to God, or as Craig said, as a message to the church that someone will be able to interpret. In the account in Acts 2 the apostles were preaching to the multitudes in their own language, but it said that those were people from all over the world who all heard the message in their own language. This is completely inspired and directed by the Holy Spirit and is a wonderful gift.

Does not the Holy Spirit indwell believers all the time. And does not the word say to pray without ceasing. If these things are true, could not the Holy Spirit inspire you to speak with other tounges at any moment as part of that prayer, which could be interpreted as speaking in tongues whenever you want to? Thank you for your concern, my dear Brother.
Hey Gene! I believe God can use us with tongues at any time, like Peter in Acts 2 or other early church fathers in the book of Acts. At the same time, the Holy Spirit is a God of decency and order, and the Bible tells us not to use tongues when our native languages will better serve the people we are ministering to. Yes God can use us anytime, but we should only use speaking in tongues privately, or if in public, only when there is a person who is trusted with interpretation of that tongue, so as not to cause confusion. I hope that helps.
