Either. There are some less than smooth parts, but you'd be fine on a road bike...

Thank you for the quick response fellow bikers, I'm from SC and ride about 30 to 40 miles a week what else can a 79 year old guy do but ride.

Hi Paul, I think it is suitable for both. I love the trail. I will say that I have a commuter bike.
