Call and cancel first. They will cancel that day or schedule someone to come out to disconnect you if needed and inform you of any fees, give deals to keep you, let you know if you are in a contract, etc. If no one needs to come out, they will end service the day you call and then they give you a few days to return any equipment to the store or mail it back to them. Confirm things are canceled correctly at the store as well. Safest way to be sure without waisting time going to the store which may tell you to call or try to convince you to stay. Also make sure you keep the receipt for your returned equipment which they should give you.

You shouldn't be charged for services but you would need to confirm with the person you are returning the equipment with. There could be a chance that you were in a contract and returned equipment before the end of the contract and they still might charge you until the end of it. If that's the case call customer service
