Check into a United Explorer Visa card. You may be able to get one with no fee for the first year only. You usually get two free United Club passes with the card. But this sort of offer is not always available. (I just checked and this offer is out there for this card issued by Chase)
No. But you can buy a one day pass. It would be worth it. You would likely be buying something to eat with a 3 hour layover. No need to spend that money at United Club, which helps lower tge real cost of the one day pass. United has upgraded its food options since it was called the Red Carpet Club. I highly recommend the Tomato Basil soup with gouda cheese, if its out the day you travel.
