I have a 2017 Jetta SEL. When I get in and close the door, the power steering assist warning light briefly comes on and there is a buzzing sound. Is this normal?

That's normal for my 2017 Golf. The buzzing is the computer unlocking the steering wheel. My warning light goes from red to yellow than off. But you can always go in and they will check it for free. Just schedule an appointment because I have just dropped by and they told me to come back.
