It's basically inbetween New York and New Jersey, but definitely closer to New Jersey. I'd say it's on the border out in the water
Late to the party but here is the answer. The water surrounding the island is NJ. The island itself belongs to NY. NY decided they wanted to make the island bigger. When they did NJ contested because the water belongs to them. Court ruled in favor of NJ. So the original land area of the island is still NY, but the parts that were man made now belongs to NJ
The main building which houses the museum. Is New York. The rest is considered part of New Jersey
It is a joint atate ownership i believe the island and buildings belong to new york however it sits in the jurisdiction of New Jersey. I think....
Well, you can get to Ellis island from New Jersey as well as New York, but the island itself is in New York, maybe. I'm not sure.
