Hi Vicki! I am not sure where you are having this possum pop up on your property, but typically they are either seeking shelter, food or water. I have a yearly visitor under my deck and she always has her babies under there. Before I let my dogs outside I always turn the light on and open/close the door 2 times to give all the yard critters a chance to escape. Possum are very harmless though and if you eliminate the resource they are seeking then they will usually go away. The fact that it can get up the tree is a good sign that it is healthy. If you have a shed or deck that it may get under try throwing some moth balls under there. They don't like the smell of that. If you have any bird feeders that will also attract all wild animals too. She may be huge because she is pregnant or carrying her babies in her pouch right now...
I have 3 small dogs and this thing is huge!! Its always in the yard in the morning and at night. I dont keep thier food or water outside so not sure what its seeking. It usually will run up one of the trees in the yard but still worries me for the safety of my furbabies
