One80 Place, in order to keep getting funding, has to have a minimum amount of people there so, whether or not they are helping people, at least they are giving the impression that they are. Cuz they don't want to lose their funding cuz then they would lose their paychecks. If they kicked everyone out who drank or did drugs then they would have just about nobody to be "helping". Plus One80 Place staff does try to help it's members by letting them learn from their decisions in the hopes that some, if not all, of its members will learn from their past and grow. If you have never had to stay at One80 Place then don't be judging because of what you see or hear or think you know. Because One80 Place isnt called One80 Place for nothing. For some it is the only place that many people can call a home and a safe, warm, and dry place to sleep at night. I should know because I have had to live there twice because I had nowhere else to go. No support from anyone except One80 Place and the VA.
We hear you’re frustrated, Yvette. So sorry. Homelessness is different for everyone and in some cases it takes more than one time to truly end it. It’s actually not unlike addiction; most people have multiple relapses. However, we can assure you that we do not allow recreational drug use on our campus. However, we also meet people where they are and if they are not ready to give up a substance we do not force them to do so as a condition to housing. Like Jared said, we let people make their own decisions. As for our facility being full, that’s because 400 people per night are homeless and our facility sleeps 160. We wish we could help everyone. Also, when we help people get back into homes, more than 90% stay housed after one year. But we agree with you, we wish we could do more.
