Pictures are allowed, but many exhibits do not allow flash.
My husband and I did take pictures and nobody advised us not too. I'm not sure about the backpack. I brought in a purse, of course, with no issue so a backpack i wouldn't think to be much different. There was no security checking bags at entrance either.

Absolutely! The staff will even take pics of your family!
Yes to both. I have brought lunch for my kids and I and no one cares. They have picnic benches outside and a cafeteria inside.
