1. You do not have to provide any documentation, sadly. Every person who thinks their dog is a person can just say "it's a service animal" and that's that. The rest of us have to endure some dog just because someone lives in fantasy land thinking their dog belongs next to me on an airplane. 2. The federal government does not recognize "emotional support" dogs as a service animal or covered as part of the ADA. 3. They should require documentation because everyone has learned that all they have to say is that their Yorkie is a "service animal" and no one can ask any questions.
Federal regulations permit emotional support animals to accompany their owners on airplanes and can stay in the cabin. With the appropriate documentation, they can accompany you free of charge. Airlines may ask for this documentation but they're not required. I'd suggest calling the relevant airline to confirm requirements.
