Depends on the info ypu seek! A lot is online at FamilySearch.org However some records are online and not searchable by keyword. There are also collections only viewable in a FHL location. Go to their site FamilySearch.org, then to their "CATALOG" so see the collections they have and the format available.
Some of these volunteers have spent so much time gathering their own histories that they bring a wealth of experience...and great insight into how and where to look. My own mom got started in 1997...I helped her find the records of her great grandfather...and that was my first time at the library!
