You have to pay. If you have kids, I highly recommend the Christmas train in December.

They have paid train rides on certain weekends through the fall and winter. I would recommend calling before or check out their website for a current schedule.
Unless they're having a special event, I think trains are only running on weekends at this time of year.
No free train rides. Pay admission fee and ride trains and view museum. I believe there is an all day pass and other. All day pass you can leave and return the sane day.
