You need a prepaid sim card kit to be able to activate it properly. You can purchase in-store or order online or pickup in several retail locations. It is not recommended to use an old SIM card for a new account activation. It may be possible if you're super tech savvy but it's not recommended.
I'm not sure I would definitely ask someone at the Verizon store before purchasing
