You will feel dizzy after 2~3 hours, just set a goal and stop when you're feel done. It is a very large museum!
Hi, we are the second largest art museum in the country, with almost a million square feet to explore. Visitors can spend hours at the museum and not see everything. However, we find that visitors can see many of the highlights within two or three hours. For quicker tours, I recommend downloading the Art Institute's free official app, which offers navigation as well as tours of the museum's most iconic works. Thanks!
If you want to cover the whole collection the best thing to do is to divide it into say 5-6 sections and explore each for half a day. But if you're casually visiting but still want to cover the whole collection, one day would be enough to just walk through everything and have a look.
I agree with Mary. To do it right, you need 2 or 3 days.
The Art Institute is huge. If you want to see everything, in detail, I would take two or three days. The last time I went we were there for 6 hours and didn't even cover a third of the museum, and there was a much that we weren't able to see. It's like... Disneyland with art! Take your time and enjoy. There's so much beautiful art there and many things that you've probably only seen in books. I would say a minimum of two days, three if you want to take your time and read all the data on the plaques about each piece of art you're interested in.
