You'll get through the line quicker and make the wait for any others shorter if you buy ahead of time on their site but its not necessary. If planning on going to free family night, tickets go fast so I'd recommend reserving those in advance.

Our visit was almost spur of the moment. Arrived around noon and walked right up to desk and bought our tickets.
The website was slow both times we went so we just bought our tickets at the door. Line moves pretty fast if you arrive in the morning.
