Because your traveling through a few tight spaces the emphasis is more about not snagging objects out of site (ie on your back or side) on their natural formations as it will affect them for centuries. I would say small purse probably ok just be careful!
When we toured they allowed small purses. Mine was just enough room for my wallet, keys, and phone and they were fine with that.
