Hey Kathy, I agree with Steve's suggestion. However, I would also encourage you to write a letter introducing yourself and the project you're proposing. Secure an appointment to meet and show your portfolio.
I would like to add that this question is really a general question about an aspect of being a professional artist. Rather than ask such a question publicly online, you should connect to real visual artists doing similar work to you (most of whom have their contact information on their website), and check out the Big Artist Opportunity list (an Excel spreadsheet) that has been circulating.
