No, I went on a friday afternoon and the ticket line only took 3-4 minutes.
No but it does help move things along a bit quicker.
If you go when it first opens in the morning, the lines are not bad. We went on a Friday and bought tickets there.

You don't need to but during busy season HIGHLY RECOMMEND buying online in advance so you don't have to wait in enormous same day ticket line
