They send a letter telling you the paperwork needed and how much time you have to bring it in. You may have to go down there to answer some more questions. Once they have all your paperwork they'll send a letter telling you what you'll be getting and for how long.
You can go to your local office or do ut online at Abe.gov
Or you can go up to the office. You might have to anyway to talk to the case worker. And give papers if you need to.
