Eric h. You are correct. There are rope bannisters to help you on your climb.
When we visited Fire Island over this past weekend they had a cutaway model of the lighthouse they had on display in the keepers home and it did not show a banister. There are 182 spiral staircase steps to the top. It was too foggy so we did not venture up the lighthouse.
Yes there are . The entire way up and I believe every 26 stairs is a platform if you need to take a break.
