For part of the American Revolution, it served as then General George Washington's headquarters. It's one of the oldest original buildings on Manhattan island and is a really lovely glimpse into what an estate house in the mid-to-late 1700s would have looked like.

The lady of the house married Aaron Burr in the house (the second marriage for each of them) and Alexander Hamilton was her lawyer when she divorced Burr.
