It's named Colombia, a female counterpart for Colombus. But may be it has some back ground to the Greek godes as the origin of the 7 seas representation comes from there, and we can understand that the 7 horns on the crown of the statu represent the 7 oveans.

I only know that the original name was "Liberty enlightening the World."
