The statue was closed for centennial restoration in January, 1884, and reopened during "Liberty Weekend", July 3-6, 1986. It was closed again after the September 11 attacks in 2001. The base reopened in 2004 and the observation deck at the top of the crown reopened on July 4, 2009. It was closed a 3rd time for further renovation in October 2011 and reopened one year later, on October 28, 2012.
