The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the country of France because France helped America fight during the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War was when America fought for freedom (which is another word for liberty) from England's rule. So, when America won the war, France wanted to congratulate America with a special gift. That gift was a statue commemorating America's liberty from England. All through America's growth as an independent nation that statue has stood in New York's harbor welcoming people from all over the world to let them know that when they arrive they have the freedom - the liberty - to live a life without another country's tyranny to hinder their freedom.
