It was built as a symbol of friendship and joint effort between two free nations, France and the United States. Built by a French sculptor, by the name of Frederic Bartholdi with help from Gustave Eiffel, of the Eiffel Tower same, and it was given as a gift to the United States for it's hundredth anniversary of independence in 1876, for the purpose of reflecting ideals, such as liberty, opportunity, democracy, human rights and peace, but it became more than that after it was erected. That is when it became a symbol of universal freedom to every citizen of the United States and for the people who visit the United States. It was built for the sole reason to show the importance of friendship between free nations and for other nations seeing it, these values our country was founded on and its principle importance of being free and living free. I hope this helps, from the author of 'The Reckoning of Rance.'
Nothing just the history monument.......
In 1865, a French political intellectual and anti-slavery activist named Edouard de Laboulaye proposed that a statue representing liberty be built for the United States. This monument would honor the United States' centennial of independence and the friendship with France.
