The ground breaking was started in 1907
Maria, maybe you need to clarify your question… The cathedral saw it’s early planning stages in the late 1800s, as a group of prominent Washington Episcopalians began discussing the idea to create a cathedral church for their newly created diocese. Earlier, the Episcopal diocese of Washington actually reported to the bishop of Maryland. The Washingtonians were successful in petitioning the Maryland bishop to have Washington become it’s own diocese with its own bishop; a cathedral church is the official seat of a bishop; therefore, the Washingtonians, having secured a new diocese and bishop, needed to consider building a cathedral church. Washington National Cathedral is the result of that. The building committee, once things got underway in earnest, selected a team of two architects to design plans for the Cathedral, and that construction began in 1907.
This is probably why Woodrow Wilson is buried in the Cathedral. His crypt is in the passage to the right of the Nave, not too far from the right section of the Sanctuary. It is a beautiful marble sarcophagus on the left side of the passage.
Stone masons
The Episcopalian Church. All Episcopalian Church in the US sent one collection monthly to the Cathedral fund to finance its building. President Woodrow Wilson spearheaded the project.
President Theodore Rosevelt laid the first stone.
