Normal amount of people. You enter very quick. You can purchase on the spot. Same ticket is also for visiting the Cloisters
You can buy tickets on the spot. There were no long lines when I went but could be different on weekends or holidays. There is a lot to see so plan on spending a few hours at the museum.
