Depends on how strict security is on the day you attend. My wife took a small backpack and had no troubles with entry. However a few years ago they had issued a clear bag that was allowed for entry and only what could fit inside it was all that was allowed.
I took a gallon size Ziploc bag with my wallet, keys & cell phone in it. You can also carry a purse or clutch about 7" long or the length of your hand.
I think it has to be a clear purse.
