Hello, I'll be in the area for the launch on the 17th Oct with my wife and two children aged 10 and 8. Is this a safe area for them to be given that the launch is planned for 12:15 AM? Is there anything that I should be aware of? bugs, gators etc?

Yep, there are gators. Just don't wear flip flops or sandles. Rocks and glass may be a hazard. Most of us out there are a bunch of nerds and we take pictures and film. We don't bite. Gators and snakes do. Worst you will see in the crowd is the locals who step out and have a full on tail gate party. Beer please?

Pretty safe area with a great view of launches. Lot of people there are also very helpful and full of good information about launches. Take bug spray for the no-see-ums
