For 2 Seniors,Is it best for me to drop off hubby first, at OAK departures, w/ 4 heavy suitcases? Then I go drop the Hertz car & take the free shuttle back to him at the airport? Or should we both ride together with the 4 suitcases to the airport?

I would recommend dropping luggage off at terminal as far as suitcases being heavy but make sure he knows he can't check them in Oakland is a stickler for ID to accompany luggage if you're flying Southwest they have curbside

I would recommend taking the luggage and the hubby on the shuttle. Give the driver a couple bucks ahead of time and they will make it easy for you.
