My understanding is that you offer what you are able reasonably to pay. They are not supposed to deny you. Work with them so they dont do something like get a lawyer. I know i pay what i can. They cant get what you dont have. Collectors want more because they get a portion of what tbey recover. Peace
I am going through this very same thing and not only did Ohio Health send my account to collections, THEY SPLIT THE ACCOUNT!! I call to make my the $50 that I can afford to pay but they want TOLD me I HAD to pay $190 for 15 months. The collection agency advised I call Ohio Health and have them fax the last 2 payments I made to the account. OH said no, those 2 payments went to the account that ISNT in collections! So now what?!? I split my payments and wait for OH to put the rest of the account in collections?! This is straight up crazy!!! And all because Ohio Health neglected to follow their contractual agreement with UHC such that UHC is obligated to pay anything towards my 2 therapy treatments! OH but I have to because OH is still getting rewarded by submitting charges that aren't covered in my plan since they forgot to follow their agreement which is now forcing me to reward them and pay. Think twice before you sign the consent form!
As long as you're still paying something every month they can't send it to a collection agency. Also, health insurance can't send it to a collection agency. As long as they are your insurance company they must honor their agreement with you and our state. Go to ohio.gov/insurance for all the laws that govern the insurance companies. Hospital and doctor bills don't affect your credit rating if you see it on your credit rating dispute it. Keep all invoices and payments made records as proof of payments made. Also nobody can sue you for nonpayments if you are on government funding... is.. SSI, SSI-D, SNAP, MEDICAID, Etc. However you're workers compensation and unemployment can be garnished by court order and if you have back child support due you can loose your drivers license. Always notify the courts of any changes in your financial situation so they can work with you.
