A taxi should cost maybe $35 to $50 (and 15%-20% tips are customary on top of fare). But you could also take the bus - take the M60 Select Bus Service from LGA and then the N subway from Astoria or the 2/3 subway from 125th. Subway/bus is maybe $5 total. (Yareny's experience is atypical, I don't know how you'd get to $85 in a yellow/green taxi.)

Take public transportation...M60 bus to 125th and then take the 2,3,4,5,A,C,B,D...all of those train lines go to 42nd St. Remember it is where you get off the bus at 125th...2,3 is 125th and Lenox. 4,5 is 125th and Lexington. A,C,B,D IS 125th and St. Nicholas. Hope that helps. 😀
I suggest to check with Uber, a taxis grom LGA to Marriott downtown charge me $85.00 and I thought it was outrageous expensive.
