Vehicle registrations are based on vehicle weight. The fee table can be here: http://www.dmv.ri.gov/documents/fees/RegByWeightChart.pdf If you did not receive a notice in the mail use the form found here: http://www.dmv.ri.gov/documents/forms/registration/TR-1.pdf All registration renewals must be processed by mail, online with a credit card or deposited in the drop-boxes located at any DMV branch location. If you are a AAA member you can renew your registration at any of the organization's branch offices. Check with your Tax Collector to see if you owe property taxes on your vehicle. If you have outstanding taxes and your city or town has placed a block against you in the DMV system, you will not receive a renewal notice and the DMV will not be able to renew your registration. Pay your property tax and have the Tax Collector send the clearance to the DMV.

No, it is not 40dollars. The renewal fee is based on the weight of the vehicle. Vehicles that have a gvw under 4000 lbs are $91.50, under 5000 lbs are $111.50 for a two year renewal, as the vechicle goes up in weight the price goes up. This is for regular passenger vehicles. Trucks are 1 year registrations and are too based on GROSS vehicle weight. Mini vans weight over 5000 lbs and usually are $127.50. vanity plates are much higher in price and can range $ 200. Or more to renew for 2 YEARS, depending on the weight of the vehicle. I work at the RI DMV IN CRANSTON RI
