The shelter is open admission, which means they do not turn away any animals in need. This means that they intake over 10,000 animals per year. They do what they can to get the adoptable animals into permanent homes, but this is not always possible. It is a common misconception that we euthanize for space or time here at Guilford County Animal Services. We evaluate every animal to enter our shelter and do everything possible to ensure a live outcome for the animals at our facility. Sometimes humane euthanasia is the best option for an animal depending on health and behavior, but we strive to have positive outcomes for every animal that can have one. We have had some pets that have stayed with us over a year before finding their new homes!
