In this sense la purisima means "immaculate" in reference to the immaculate (without original sin) conception of the Blessed Vigin Mary. In Catholic theology the Immaculate Conception is dogma, or in other words, a tenet of their belief philosophy.
This mission was founded by Father Fermin Lasuen on December 8th in 1787 on the Roman Catholic day of the 'Feast of the Immaculate Conception,' and therefore became the Mission's name. The translated name was: 'The Mission of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary'. The original name was: 'La Mision de La Purisima Concepcion de la Santisima Virgen Maria.'
It's called La Purisima Concepcion because catholics name every church honoring Saints. Purisima means pure, not sins.
