We brought bottled water in our backpacks. There was a bag check, but it wasn't a problem. They do sell all sorts of beverages (and really good food) during the cruise, and they have a water station set up with ice cold water for $1 as you exit the boat to the French Quarter. You can but you don't have to. I would not bring glass containers. They do do bag and purse checks.
