Impossible to see only the tomb of Marie Laveaux, you have to pay a 45-minute visit at a cost of US$25 per person. A tourist trap

Last time we came it was free. This time it's $25. Do you have to pay if you have family interred there? Rip-off.

The tour guide was hilarious and stated that Marie Lavaeux could be in one of two crypts. Well maintained cemetery.

You can make arrangements ahead of time with a tour company. There are also guides at the gate, which is what I used as I didn't know a guide was required ahead of time. I did have to wait a few minutes (about 15) but it wasn't an excessive wait. The guide I ultimately had was I believe through the Catholic diocese, which maintains the cemetery. She was knowledgeable and the tour was informative, interesting, and fun. We weren't able to see every tomb, but stopped at many notable ones, including Marie Laveau's and Nicholas Cage's. I believe there fee was $20 a person, but would recommend double checking that is correct. We were able to pay with a credit card at the cemetery. Another thing to keep in mind it's that the guides do accept tips.

Does anyone know of a tour of Marie Laveau's tomb with an hour or less duration?

The official St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 tour was about 45 minutes. You buy your tickets near the tomb. At the Basin St. Station next to the cemetery. The tour covers Marie Laveau’s tomb and much more. I enjoyed it.

Visiting the beginning of next month. Are cemeteries open now, or still closed due to covid restrictions?

Not sure if or when this is open. Very intriguing. It was closed late afternoon when I visited.

Which is a good tour company to book with to ensure we get to go into the cemetery. How long are the tours?

At the front gate, they sell them has you walk in. It is a tour and you have to go in a group with a guide.. myself I would have preferred to walk the place alone. We didn't get to go through the whole cemetery. They pick and choose which tombs you get to see. $20 a head and you are in a group of 15 plus people, very crowded

When you are put in a tombate you buried in the ground

The first cemetery in New Orleans designed for aboveground burial was the St. Louis #1 cemetery, which opened in 1789. Some accounts claim it was modeled after Paris’s famous Père-Lachaise cemetery, and there can be no doubt that the two bear a strong resemblance to each other. But Père-Lachaise wasn’t used as a cemetery until 1804, so that resemblance may be coincidental. Be that as it may, there is a significant difference that goes beyond the superficial similarities. At Père-Lachaise, the visible structures are, for the most part, just monuments; the bodies themselves are usually placed in vaults in the floors of the tombs. In New Orleans, however, bodies are usually placed inside the walls of the tombs. Because of the hot, subtropical climate, the tomb then effectively becomes an oven, and the high heat causes the body to decompose rapidly in a process that has been compared to a slow cremation. Within about a year, only bones are left. https://itotd.com/articles/453/new-orleans-c
