Do I need the scanner headset or will I be able to hear the commentary in the grandstands? I.e. Daytona was quieter than New Hampshire, had to wear headset , at Daytona I could hear without them.

It's a must have, listening to the race on a scanner allows you to follow the race, hear your favorite driver. It will take your raceway experience to the next level

I would recommend a scanner for any track most importantly because it offers a level of hearing protection. You can keep up with far more than the track, including drivers, spotter and crew chiefs.
