Just want to get to an area to hand play with snow, kid has never played in it. Just to do that do I need snow chains?

Yes. Bcz the roads are very narrow and its risky to drive in the snow. Our car got stuck even when it was very low snowfall. Had to use chains to get it out

Yes, but there are places nearby that will rent them to you. But make sure you get there early enough.

Snow chains are sold in the area. It is very much recommend as the roads are slippery and winding a lot. Try not to drive there in the dark. The snow is pass the famous sequoia, on the higher elevations.

It's advisable to have them on hand.
