I've never had an issue there and I've stayed there and at the George around the corner 5 times. You will likely see homeless but that's all over DC and I haven't seen any shady actors.
Yes. Very safe. Stayed there last weekend. The George is also nice and bigger rooms for cheaper, not to mention the parking garage is right accross from the George because the hotels charge like 40 per night for parking, where as the parking garage is like 20ish but it's a nice area
