Great answer from Angela Faulconer! I agree that Capitol Reef is a natural resort. We spent a week there in early October and found it to be a beautiful setting with wonderful hikes and interesting history. As to Hayes's specific questions, Capitol Reef is not a resort like staying at a fancy hotel on a tropical beach or going to Disney World. If you wish to stay inside the park, camping is the only option. But there are plenty of hotels and a few rental houses just outside the park in the town of Torrey. Also some very nice restaurants in Torrey. As to the weather, I don't know about today (you could just check weather.com for that) but when we were there in early October the weather varied. We had mostly sunny skies and pleasant temperatures, but we also had some rain and even a day with an inch of snow. Well, snow in Torrey but rain in the park. Good luck with your project!
I would say Capitol Reef is a natural (at opposed to man-made) resort. There are stunning red rock formations that tower into the sky. There is a little hidden oasis, a patch of green trees amidst all the red, called Fruita, with orchards where you can pick the most amazing peaches on earth. We saw a coyote there, just a few feet away. All the fruit is free. There are slot canyons where the rock walls tower right next to each other and there is barely room for your body to fit through. There are petroglyphs where ancient peoples drew on the rocks. If you have a sturdy off-road vehicle you can go on crazy roads with giant red boulders and see sites that are completely inaccessible to regular cars. My favorite part of Capitol Reef is the hiking. There are lots of places you can see only if you walk and climb to them. It is fun to scramble over the rocks to behold the next breathtaking vista more spectacular than I could ever have imagined. Hiking in the park makes me feel closer to God.
There is a campground on the park. No resorts though. There town that's just outside the park, Torrey, has a lot of hotels and resorts though.
