My small breed dog chewed up an insulin pen. I know he did not swollow any pieces of the pen but may have ingested some insulin. It is Levemir ( long lasting insulin). What side affects should i be watching for?

My best advice is to call The Emergency Vet Clinic. They are open 24 hrs on the weekend. I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier. They are great people. I hope your little dog is okay. Please put a note here & let me know.

Call them ASAP. They will be able to answer your question adequately. That, or call your veterinarian. FYI, insulin is known to be destroyed by the process of digestion, so swallowing any is not a concern. However, recent studies DO show it can be absorbed through the lining inside the mouth if not swallowed, so absorption could have occurred this way.
