Why is it called the half-way house

I once read it is called that because it was the half way point/stop from Richmond to Petersburg

Back in the day it was the half way point to Petersburg from Richmond. It was an 8 hour trip by stage to that point, they spend the night on to Petersburg

In the 1700s, it was halfway between Richmond and Petersburg and people could stop there to refresh and eat before continuing on.
