My car was recently totaled in an accident. Do I surrender my plates or keep them for a new vehicle?

If cancel insurance on vehicle you must turn in plates first but if switching vehicle then keep plates and registration for new vehicle

If you plan on canceling the insurance for that vehicle, then you need to turn in the plates. If you are switching vehicles on your insurance, then you would keep the plates and just switch the registration.
