I would think that a car would be a necessity in order to get downtown, even if you purchase a residence on the island. It is a lovely town but I'm sure you would want to rent something for a while before deciding to jump in with both feet. Punta Gorda is similar in that one car and a pair of hood walking shoes is all that's needed.
We bought in Punta Gorda in 2010. As far as downtown nothing has changed and you can walk everywhere! It's wonderful! Historic Downtown Venice is very much the same way but you have to be able to get there from the outlying residential neighborhoods. Yes, a car is recommended. Also if you're used to a large town with a selection of grocery stores you won't find that in these quaint little small towns. Those are more on the perimeter of town. Definitely come down ad stay before you buy. It's a lifestyle that takes some getting use to. If you're a hustle bustle person this may not be the place for you!
I have lived and worked here as a realtor for years. Quite a lot has changed in regards to Venice downtown and your ability to get around without a car. The Island now allows Uber and Lyft. During season, there are trolleys. Publix is right on the Island. Tons of shops, restaurants, Venice Little theater and more. I would be happy to show you around our paradise!
My Aunt lives in Venice FL so I am only a frequent visitor. So my answer would be just my own opinion. Probably for your own convenience. But it is a very quaint community and there is lots in walking distance. I do remember seeing some buses. And I'm sure there are local Taxis. As well as Uber & Lyft.. Take a trip down and visit... Then you can make your own educated guess.
This is a great area for walking. Of course there are buses, taxi, Uber, etc.
