You have to buy a bird like mine. He will hurt any cat that comes near him. He is full bred Green Indian Ringneck and all boy. He has a very loud screach and will hurt a cat with his beak. No playing around. It is natural instinct. Always keep cats and birds separate from each other. Animals are territorial and I would think twice before you bring a bird into your home. Keep them separated.
If you really want birds then keep them in seperate rooms of your house. Also a predator proof cage, maybe one with glass or plexiglass instead of bars. Third, suspend the cage from the ceiling where the cat cannot access the cage by jumping or climbing. If you can't do those 3 things then it's a very bad idea. Even the most ferocious bird has to sleep. Not to mention the stress the bird will endure if it is not safe at all times.
Get rid of your cats
Country living mindset here but...once a dog or cat has a taste of the hunt, they'll always hunt. In other words, once a bird killer, always a bird killer. You could try and put air jets by the cage to chase away your cats, but that could terrify your bird, and may not work for your cats. I had a few LGD's growing up and I had to put two down because they started killing our livestock, and you can't stop them once they tasted the blood and thrill.
A cat can kill a bird with just 1 scratch. Just something to keep in mind
