Why do you only allow one other person to be in delivery room? A pregnant mother has to choose spouse or mother.. it's wrong. From what I've seen.. nurses don't want any experienced person in the room so they can tell patient whatever they want.

More than one visitor IS allowed in the delivery room for a vaginal birth (3-4 max) but only 1 person for a C-section for infection purposes. If the delivery is very high risk and we are expecting a sick or premature baby, we need to have fewer visitors in order to make room for all of the additional staff needed to ensure proper care for the newborn, giving him/her the best chance of surviving and thriving. Other than these situations we ask the patient who she wants in the room during actual pushing and they let us know their wishes. And we nurses volunteer to be the bad guy and tell the family that they aren't allowed in so that they are mad at us instead of the pregnant mother.

Because in previous experiences patients would bring in more people into the birthing suite, so they drew the line at 1 person. Also things can go bad very quickly and when they do additional equipment and staff are needed. They do not want extra people in the way. I know it's a hard decision and they do this not to be mean but it's for the mom and baby's safety.
