When playing on the airsoft field I know it's required that you have ear protection, now does said ear protection have to be made of a hard material such as plastic or even mesh ones, or can I just wear something like a balaclava to protect my ears?

That's incorrect. Approved hard ear pro would need to be mesh or hard plastic from say a mask or airsoft headphones
