Not a no-kill shelter as it is the pound for city of Berkeley, but they hold a very low rate of animals euthanized. Many local rescue groups and volunteers step up to seek homes or foster homes for animals if their days are numbered.
They only euthanize animals if they are not deemed adoptable. If they have no more room at the shelter they will send them to other shelters. They do not kill because of lack of space.
Yes, they euthanize at this shelter, but have a low rate and try very hard to get animals adopted or into foster care. Very dedicated team of volunteers there.
Yes
They only euthanize animals if they are not deemed adoptable. For example a dog that has bitten several people, and has killed another dog or cat while in foster/adoption home, would not be adoptable (or even safe to walk in public) and probably not appropriate to be handed off to any of the no-kill private pet adoption groups. They Berkeley shelter staff and voluneers work very hard to socialize animals that are broght in in as unadoptable -- attacking, biting, or fearful, or all of the above. Once an animal has become more comfortable with people and other animals, then the private adoption organizations will come in and "rescue" it and show it for adoption.
No defenetly not!!!
